Diamagnetic Suppression of Component Magnetic Reconnection at the Magnetopause

چکیده
We present particle-in-cell simulations of collisionless magnetic reconnection in a system (like the magnetopause) with a large density asymmetry across the current layer. In the presence of an ambient component of the magnetic field perpendicular to the reconnection plane the gradient creates a diamagnetic drift that advects the X-line with the electron diamagnetic velocity. When the relative drift between the ions and electrons is of the order the Alfvén speed the large scale outflows from the X-line necessary for fast reconnection cannot develop and the reconnection is suppressed. We discuss how these effects vary with both the plasma β and the shear angle of the reconnecting field and discuss observational evidence for diamagnetic stabilization at the magnetopause.

Cluster observation of continuous reconnection at dayside magnetopause in the vicinity of cusp
In this paper, we present a case study of continuous reconnection at the dayside magnetopause observed by the Cluster spacecraft. On 1 April 2003, the four Cluster spacecraft experienced multiple encounters with the Earth’s dayside magnetopause under a fairly stable southwestward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). Accelerated plasma flows, whose magnitude and direction are consistent with the...
متن کاملCluster multispacecraft observations at the high-latitude duskside magnetopause: implications for continuous and component magnetic reconnection
We report multispacecraft Cluster observations of magnetic reconnection at the high-latitude magnetopause/magnetospheric boundary layer (MP/BL) under mainly northward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) conditions. The event we study is on 3 December 2001 when the Cluster spacecraft were skimming the high-latitude duskside MP/BL during a period of about four hours. The orbit and configuration o...
متن کاملMagnetopause reconnection impact parameters from multiple spacecraft magnetic field measurements
[1] We present a novel technique that exploits multiple spacecraft data to determine the impact parameters of the most general form of magnetic reconnection at the magnetopause. The method consists of a superposed epoch of multiple spacecraft magnetometer measurements that yields the instantaneous magnetic spatial gradients near a magnetopause reconnection site. The gradients establish the inst...

The magnetospheric cusp is a funnel-shaped region where shocked solar wind plasma is able to enter the high-latitude magnetosphere via the process of magnetic reconnection. The plasma observations include various cusp signatures such as ion energy dispersions and diamagnetic effects. We present an overview analysis of cusp plasma observations at the Saturnian magnetosphere from the Cassini spac...
متن کاملDependence of the depth of the Earth ’ s plasma depletion layer on the interplanetary magnetic field direction and the Alfvénic Mach number
The Earth’s magnetosheath, the transition region between the Earth’s magnetopause and the bow shock, is a space laboratory for the investigation of magnetoactive plasmas. Analogeous studies are also the aim of the LAPLAS experiment planned for the FAIR facility at GSI [1]. One of the recent problems of the magnetosheath physics is the dependence of its plasma depletion layer on the direction of...
